01 - Nearly There!
Only three month to go until my trip starts - Cant wait!!!

I've nearly got everything sorted for leaving, but the main thing I need to make a decision about is what camera/lenes to buy.

At the moment Ive got a Canon E0S 300D with a Canon EF18-55mm Lens and a Sigma 10-20mm Lens.

I've been wanting to upgrade my camera for about a year now as Id like to take the next step toward making a career out of photography. The 300D is a great camera, dont get me wrong but there are a lot better ones out there now... i got it around 5 years ago and and its only 6.3 megapixel.

One camera that has caught my eye is the Canon 5D Mark II - at £1800 it isnt cheap, which I dont mind when considering what im going to get out of it over the next few years. My only problem with the 5D Mark II is an issue regarding lenses.

I love taking wide angle photos and probably 80-90% of the photos i take are at maximum frame. The sigma wide angle lens I have at the moment works great with the 300D, however it isnt compatible with the 5D - it causes a massive vignette on the photos - so this means if i get the %d - i'll need to get some lenses as well.

Basically what im asking is; With wide angle landscapes in mind, which lens do you think I should get for the 5DII ?

or should i go for a completely different camera so i can still use my current lenses?

The images below show the sort of wide angles Im hoping to achieve with the 5d - do you think it will be possible??:

I went through the same upgrade to a 5D in 2008 - I already had a 17-40 which I had been using on the 300D so I got a 24-105L as a 'walk around' lens and a 70-300IS to complete the set. The 17-40 is excellent for landscapes, it lives on my camera pretty much all the time.

I wouldn't bother with anything cheaper, those lenses will not have the resolution to make the most of the 5D II's megapixels

ah right, well im glad ive made the right choice - my camera and lenses got delivered around 2 weeks ago i think. haven't had the chance to use it yet but i will soon when i leave for a trip of 18months! ;)

i really wasnt sure which other lens to get as i went for the cheaper 17-40 as opposed to the 16-35. I had a bit of extra money to spend and wanted another lens so i opted for the affordable canon 85m 1.8. the company sent me the 85mm 1.2 instead which was a silly move by them... go me. The lens is unbelievable, which is no wonder when you see the price they should have charged me for it. lol ;)

thanks for the advice even though ive already got the lens - maybe i need too update my journal. ;) - buts interesting to hear you talk about the megpaixels - nobody's ever said anything about that before. im really glad i went with the 17-40 now. ;)

I've got my eyes the 5DMKII too, just trying to save some money to get the bugger. I am also wondering about which glass to get. I think I'll go with the Canon 17-40L over the Canon 16-35L. Main reason is price and also filter thread size is 77mm on the 17-40. I think the 16-35 may be smaller, not sure but it's double the price of the 17-40. I was considering using my 10-22mm but that's too much messing around for me, getting it to fit and what not. I've heard no complaints with the 17-40 and for the price you can't go wrong.
I recently got the Canon 70-200 f/2.8 L USM so I'm looking forward to that on the 5DMKII. When do you think you'll get the new camera? :)

exactly the same thoughts here - although i didnt realise about the difference in thread size. Was a bit of a bonus because i had the sigma 10-20 for the 300d - so my polarizing filter just got switched over.

Ive actually got the camera now - it got delivered from ebuyer.com - it was the cheapest i could find it for on the net from at least a half decent company - i just checked the price and its gone up 20% since i bought mine but i think they have a new stock in so maybe it wall all again in a few weeks - keep an eye on the stock level. i got mine when it was around 5 left in stock. [link]

I got the 17-40 - the lens is sweet from what i can tell so far - but i haven't had the chance to use it properly yet. Im on my travels in 8 weeks time for about 18 months so i'll have lots of time soon. I think i got the for 40% cheaper than anywhere else i could find. I also ordered the Canon 85 mm - F/1.8, which is mainly for portraits i think - this was around 20% cheaper than anywhere else... However the company who i bought it from really fucked up the order and sent me a Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II, which is over 4 times as expensive as the 85mm 1.8. and its an amazing lens - the clarity of the photos are unbelievable and the focus / background blur is stunning.

This company is www.simplyelectrontics.com - its a company based in hong kong. I would only recommend using them if your desperate because they are VERY cheap... although they do have a bad reputation for bad customer service and delayed orders - i think they solve most complaints and ive never seen anybody complain about orders not turning up at all. The gamble really paid off for me because they sent me the wrong lens.

if they had sent me the correct lens, I think i would have saved 1200 bucks by shopping with these guys than going to the regular store - but with the fcuk up it was around $3800 saved.

i think they sell the 16-35 on discount too - worth a try if you dont mind dealing with a company in hong kong.

so which cam do you have at the moment? your pictures are stunning!

You done real good by the sounds of that, big time score! I'm probably going to order mine from Quickshop [link] That's where I got my 70-200 f/2.8L and had no problems with shipping or anything. It's all imported stock from Hong Kong too so it's a lot cheaper than retail. I can't be fucked converting to AUD but I'm guessing the place you got yours and Quickshop would be similar.

Right now I have been using the 40D. I'm only upgrading cause I want full frame for image quality, or else I would have gone the 7D but nah. I also have the 500D which I won in a competition, haven't opened it though cause I'm selling it to go towards the 5DMKII.

By the way, thank you for your kind words. Your gallery is quite nice too mate. I'll have to pop over and watch ya :)

wow the 5d is a lot cheaper than what i got it for. maybe i'll use these guys in the future. cheers for the link.

so how long have you been taking photos with an slr then? i got my first around 5 years ago, but only really started using it about 2 years ago - i was really into graphic design, which is what originally brought me to this website. I finished my degree in design and now ive found my love of photography. starting to have second thoughts about a career, which is why i got the 5d. travel and photography - couldn't ask for a lot more that. im just struggling to get my photos out at the moment - most places ive asked want to buy the rights to the photos, which im not too happy about - i still want the ownership of them.

Im just asking because i see your page says that you're 20 - your photos look amazing - like you've been doing it for year and years. do you sell much of your work?

thanks for the watch man - its an honor, especially when your from the country most of my pics are from.

I faves a lot of your gallery over the last few months so the only thing i had left to do was fave a few more and add you to my watch list!

They're good guys to deal with. Some of my mates shop there as well and haven't had any dramas involving, and they almost always have what you want in stock. Definitely check them out next time you want to buy something, they sell pretty much everything!

I've been doing photography for about 2 years now. I got my diploma in professional digital photography last year and since then I've just been enjoying the great outdoors, shooting, camping and loving it to the max. I haven't really sold any of my works, sold a few to family friends but that's about all. Done well in a few competitions and what not but it's more a hobby for me at the moment. My goal is to eventually make a living out of it. I think that's every photographers biggest goal, that and fame of course :giggle:

Cheers.

I second what dan says.

Dude you should probably be looking at the 17-40L f4, It is about $1000 Australian so that would be around 500 pound yeh?

The 16-35L is good also but it is double the price.

They are a little bit expensive but they are L series lenses and the image clarity will blow you away!

I say stick on getting the 5D MkII. They are sweet! :P

The only other camera I might suggest is the new 7D. But I have no experience with it and I don't know anything more about it than the release notes.

thanks for the advice! i got the 17-40 and and 5d mkII and all for £500 cheaper than i expected! they came to £2100.

also ordered the canon 85mm 1.8 for about £300 - however the website TOTALLY messed the order up and sent me the Canon EF 85mm f/1.2L USM II, which is worth £1800... lol silly billys.

they asked for it back but according to 'The Unsolicited Goods Act of 1971' i can claim it as a gift! - unlucky.

I had a word with a guy in a camera shop about the differences between the 7d and the 5d - apparently the 5d is better suited for landscape photos.
